Obituary

Valerie (Val) Susanne (Scime, Graham) Nostdahl of Bottineau, ND, age 71, passed away February 11, 2026 in her home from heart failure.

Born in Corona Navy Hospital, Corona CA on April 21,1954 to Shirley Jean Carman Scime and Paul Stephen Scime, she was the second daughter of the couple. Her siblings were older sister, Jean, brothers Mitchell, Douglas, and half-brothers Raymond and Gordon. Her father, Paul, died on April 19, 1957 and Valerie was later adopted by her stepfather, Royal Royce Graham when she was 13 years old.

The Grahams moved to Virginia and Valerie graduated from Robert E.Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia in 1972 and the family then returned to California. She studied at Fullerton University in Orange County for early childhood development.

Valerie married the love of her life, William (Bill) Nostdahl on July 15, 1973 in Yorba Linda, California. Valerie met Bill while he was stationed in Southern California for the U.S. Marine Corps. Bill and Val made their home in Yorba Linda until Bill's honorable discharge on Jan. 30, 1976 when they moved back to Bottineau, and together they built a house and a life nestled in the foothills of the Turtle Mountains. Val carried her West Coast roots with her throughout her life, even after her journey brought her far from where it began.

Val worked off and on as a daycare worker and was a stay-at-home mom to the couple's daughters, Serenity and Amanda. The family moved for a short time to Stafford, Virginia in 1985, where Valerie reunited with her close friend from High School, Jan Fraizer. The Nostdahls returned to Bottineau in 1987. The couple bought the Botno Theatre in 1992 and operated it as a family business and hobby for 18 years. Valerie was the main ticket taker and welcomed many patrons to 'enjoy the show.'

Valerie is preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, William Bruce Nostdahl, mother Shirley McMahan, father Paul Scime, stepfather Royal Royce Graham, and brother Doug Graham.

Her family who remain to remember her are her two daughters and their families: Serenity Richard married to Matthew Richard and Amanda Fett married to Daniel Fett. Her grandchildren: Matthias Richard, Anya Richard, Alaythia Richard, Reagan Fett, and Eden Fett. She is also survived by her siblings and their respective families: Jean Dieter, Mitchell Graham, Raymond Graham, and Gordon Graham.

Valerie will be remembered for her contagious laugh, sense of humor, love of gift giving, and her childlike faith in God.

Valerie's funeral will be held at Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau, ND on Monday, February 16th at 2 pm. Public viewing will begin at 1:00 pm.
