Thomas
Matteson
Nov 27, 1957 — Jan 18, 2021
Tom Matteson, age 63, of Alexandria, MN, formerly of Westhope, ND, passed away on Monday, January 18th, 2021 at his home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Thomas Ray Matteson, a son of Garnett and Bernice (Tonneson) Matteson, was born on November 27th, 1957 in Bottineau. He grew up in Westhope and graduated from Westhope High School in 1976. After high school, he worked construction and in the oil fields of North Dakota. After his father died in 1980, he took over managing and operating Garney's Pump Shop. The business was sold in 1982 and he then attended the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton and earned his degree in welding. He worked construction in Robbinsdale, MN, and in the late 1990's, he moved to Alexandria, MN, where he continued to work until he retired in 2009, due to an injury.
Tom enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He traveled back to Westhope to hunt after he moved to Minnesota and always enjoyed visiting Fort Peck, Montana with Mike and Spencer for their annual fishing trip. Alexandria was an ideal home for Tom, as it was close to plenty of lakes for good fishing.
Tom was a Vikings, Twins, and Timberwolves fan and collected sports memorabilia over the years. He made sure to catch as many games as he could and he even attended a few live events.
He enjoyed playing golf as one of his pastimes and made a hole in one on Hole 5 at the Westhope Country Club before the days of grass greens, back when they were still sand.
He enjoyed riding his Harley and would happily give his niece and nephews a spin anytime, as well as anyone that wanted to take a quick trip.
Tom liked to collect vintage items and had quite the collection.
He will always be remembered as a kind and caring man, who always had time for the people in his life.
Tom is survived by his brother, Mike (Kathy) Matteson of Westhope; sisters Deb (Jon) Kibby of Bloomington, MN, and Susie Matteson of Minot. He is also survived by niece Tiffany Matteson of Minot; nephews, Spencer Matteson of Landa, and Nick (Nikki) Kibby of Burnsville, MN; aunts, LaVonne (Norman) Pederson of San Antonio, TX, Nancy Wright of Coffeyville, KS, and Irene Tonneson of Souris; and numerous cousins.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Arrangements were with Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau and Westhope. Friends may sign the online register book at www.nerofuneralhome.net.
