Terry Baumann, formerly of Westhope, North Dakota, died Tuesday at Somerset Assisted Living in Minot North Dakota. They will be honored with a celebration of both Janice and Terry's lives on June 14, 2024 in Westhope, North Dakota. There will be a 10:00 A.M. mass at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. A burial ceremony will follow at the Westhope Cemetery. There will be a luncheon served at the Westhope Country Club after the burial service for all who wish to join their families in "Celebrating the Lives of Janice and Terry".
Terry was born on July 27, 1941 to Winthrop and Mabel (Feken) Baumann. He was raised in Westhope and graduated from Westhope Public School in 1959. It was upon his high school graduation that Terry chose to go into the Army. Terry served in the Army until 1961. He was called home from the military in order to take over the family grocery business that his Dad, Winthrop and Mom, Mabel owned and operated. Winthrop's illness and death in 1961 resulted in Terry continuing the Baumann grocery business. Terry was then given an honorary military discharge to help his Mom Mabel with running the grocery business.
Terry was 19 years old when he and Mabel continued the Baumann grocery store legacy. Terry's Grandfather Albert and his Grandmother Alice built Baumann's store in Westhope in 1902.
The Baumann store began with not only food items, but had a clothing and a hardware section. Albert and Alice's son Winthrop and Mabel turned the store into a grocery only business. The original Baumann's store was replaced with a building that currently stands on Main Street of Westhope, North Dakota.
Terry married the love of his life, Janice Thorenson, on November 10, 1965. They had recently celebrated 58 years of marriage. Terry made his wife Janice his priority and called her "his cutie" until his last days on earth.
After his Mom Mabel's death in 1981, Terry became the primary owner and operator of Baumann's Jack and Jill. He ran the grocery business for 37 years.
Terry was a community minded businessman and was generous over the years with giving out lots of smiles, interacting in friendly visits with anyone he met and was known for having lively conversations with people in the community. Terry loved telling stories and always held an interested audience. Terry had a wonderful personality. He made friends wherever he went. He loved to laugh and always looked for reasons to share his humor with others. Baumann's Jack and Jill was a busy location on Main Street of Westhope because of Terry's ability to make customers his priority plus his genuinely kind nature.
Terry sold Baumann's Jack and Jill after 98 years in the Baumann name in November of 1998. Upon his retirement from the grocery business, Terry and his wife Janice took over maintaining the Westhope Cemetery grounds for 22 years. Terry and Janice maintained the Westhope Cemetery grounds ensuring that it was always beautiful and well-groomed during the summer months.
Terry's dedication to the Westhope community was evident in the way he cared for others and lived his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Terry is survived by his wife, Janice; his daughter Lisa and son-in-law Kevin Paintner and their three children; his daughter Vicki and son-in-law Jeff Bauman and their three children; and Norma Baumann with her two children. Terry also had two great grandchildren.
Family meant the world to this great man. Terry adored his wife Janice and helped care for her up until his very last day. He exemplified the character traits of faith, hope and love throughout his life.
Terry is preceded in death by his parents Winthrop and Mabel Baumann; and his brothers Larry Baumann, Donald Baumann, Jim Baumann and his son Todd Baumann.
