Obituary

In the early hours of Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Steve Watson, age 70 of Bottineau, left us to be with the Lord after his third battle with cancer.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran church in Bottineau.  Visitation will be Sunday starting at 5:00 pm with a prayer service at 6:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Steve was born to Phyllis and Charles Jr Watson on November 18, 1953.  He was a graduate of Maxbass High School and received his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Minot State University.  On August 6, 1977, he married Mary Guiswite.  This union brought 2 children, Scott and Melissa.  After working on the family farm for 12 years, Steve decided to go into law enforcement.  In 1989, he was hired by the Bottineau County Sheriff's Department.  For 9 years, he rose up the ranks as city deputy, chief deputy and then elected as sheriff.  This was the title he proudly held for 24 years until his retirement in 2022.

Steve was the prime example of compassion and patience.  He loved his family and his community with all he had.  He always knew how to make anyone he met smile with his warm presence.  Steve loved history, especially Native American history.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and he loved to laugh. Most importantly, Steve was a great friend, devoted husband, wonderful father and amazing Papa Steve & Papa Bug.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary; his son, Scott (Brenda) Watson and daughter, Melissa Stevens.  He also has 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were with Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.  Friends may sign the online register book at www.nerofuneralhome.net.
