Obituary

Sheryl Elaine (Axness) Moen, age 74, of Upham, ND, died at her home on February 29, 2024.  Her memorial service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 11:00 am at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Upham.

She was born in Minot, ND, on April 6, 1949, to Roy and Ila (Erickson) Axness, and was raised in Carpio, ND. Sheryl attended Carpio High School, graduating in 1967, before attending Minot State University, in Minot, ND, graduating in May 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in Education.  On August 22, 1987, she was united in marriage with her best friend and love of her life, Burnell Moen.  They made their home with their daughters, Louisa and April, in Upham, ND, on a farm overlooking the beautiful prairies of North Dakota that they loved so much.

Sheryl's teaching career in English began in Bowbells, ND, in the fall of 1971. Over the next many years she taught in Sherwood, ND; Upham, ND; and finally for several years in Newburg, ND, where she eventually retired in May 2020.  Sheryl was truly a self-taught artist and crafter creating beautiful paintings, flower arrangements, and intricate bead work which was enjoyed by many.  She joined with other friends as they shared their love of arts and crafts while working at The Front Porch in Bottineau, ND.  Sheryl loved the simple life, the beauty of nature, and above all else her family who was always near and dear to her heart.

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her brother Arlyn; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Edwin and Judith Moen; two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and aunts and uncles.  She is survived by her husband Burnell, daughters Louisa (Aaron) Rogers and April Moen, and grandchildren Isabella, Abygail and Royce Rogers and Kalyden and Kyla Boehler. Sheryl is also survived by her siblings Gary (Nicolette) Axness of Fargo; Marilyn Kvamme of Minot; Joel (Susan) Axness of Minot; Mike (Jan) Axness of Jasper, Georgia; and Leanne (Brian) Axelson of Minot.  She was also dearly loved by her many surviving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
