Obituary

Robert Frank Szczys, 79, passed away on October 12, 2026, at Arrowhead Senior Living in Osage Beach, Missouri. Bob was born in 1947 in Bottineau, North Dakota, to Frank and Ione (Lonsbrough) Szczys. He married Elizabeth Jones in 1972, and she survives him.

Bob graduated from Bottineau High School in 1965 and attended the North Dakota School of Forestry, where he earned his associate degree. He continued his education at the University of North Dakota, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. He then earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1972, followed by an internship and surgical residency at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Bob practiced medicine in Rugby and Grand Forks, North Dakota, from 1978 to 2000. He later served as Medical Director at Noridian Government Services until 2015. Throughout his distinguished medical career, he held certifications with the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also served as president of the North Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 1985 and 1992.

A proud Eagle Scout, Bob earned his rank in 1963 and remained deeply committed to the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life. He served on local and national committees and held leadership roles as both assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster. In recognition of his dedication and service, he received the National Distinguished Service Award, the Silver Antelope Award, and the Silver Beaver Award.

Bob was also a lifelong music enthusiast and enjoyed performing with several musical organizations, including the Grand Forks City Band, the Minnesota 9th District American Legion Band, the Boulder County Concert Band, the Lake Area Community Orchestra, and the Lake Jazz Band. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting Boy Scouts of America memorabilia, and model railroading.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Elizabeth; his children, Patricia (Finnagan) Augusta and Michael (Amanda) Szczys; and his grandchildren, Asa Augusta, Ione Augusta, and Merrick Szczys.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers or gifts. Memorial contributions in Bob’s honor may be made to the Lake Area Community Orchestra or the Boy Scouts of America.
