Obituary

Ona Monson, age 83 of Bottineau, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at a Bottineau nursing home.  A private family service will be held.  Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Ona Elaine Monson a daughter of William C. and Jennie (Vestre) Fairweather on October 7, 1941 in Souris, North Dakota. She grew up on the Fairweather Farm north of Souris, North Dakota. She was the eleventh of eleven children. She graduated from Bottineau High School and attended college in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On August 6, 1962, Ona married the love of her life, Ronald Monson, in Rugby, North Dakota. The made their home in Bottineau, North Dakota for 62 years. Ona worked at MSU Bottineau for 28 years. After her retirement she cooked at the Grace Lutheran Brethren Church for many years. Ona worked numerous jobs in the food industry in Bottineau and Lake Metigoshe.

Ona was a hard worker and liked to keep busy. She had a love for cooking and enjoyed cooking for her family and anyone in the community. Ona loved the cattle and the farm. Ona could be found at all hours of the night out checking the cows during calving season. She loved to garden and tried everything to make her daughter Brenda into a gardener.

Ona was best known for her love of cooking and baking.  She was always baking something to share with her family whether it be banana bread, donuts or fresh brad and buns.  She loved to keep busy and was a hard worker.  She enjoyed the farm and helping Ronnie take care of the cattle.  She loved to garden and especially loved her flowers.  She was well liked by all the kids she cooked for over the years at the college and later at the church.  Ona knew everyone and loved to visit.

She is survived by her husband Ronald, children Brenda Watson (Scot) and Brad (Darci); nine grandchildren, Dustin, Andrea (Josh), Patrick (Sam), Garrett, Jeremy (Ashley), Alyssa, Mitchell, Travis, and Kaleb; three great grandchildren, Hailey, Alli, and Alexander.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Greg.
