Obituary

Mark Jeffrey Schimetz, age 72, passed away on November 11, 2024, at the Garrison Long Term Care facility.  He was born to Louis and Stella Schimetz, on June 16, 1952 in the Bottineau Hospital.   Mark graduated from Dunseith High School in 1970. He immediately went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad and eventually became a welder there.  He was known to be an excellent welder.  He spent 13 years total working for BN.

A proud veteran, Mark was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War, serving as a Military Policeman (MP) in the 709th MP Division in Germany, from 1972 through 1974. He was a member of the American Legion Archie Jardine Post 185, Dunseith and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW).  He often donated to POW-MIA and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Returning from Germany, he again, went to work for BN for several years.  Eventually, he followed his passion for auto mechanics and got an associates degree from Devils Lake. He then moved to Lubbock, Texas and opened his own auto mechanic shop. After a few years, Mark moved back to ND and opened a shop in Devil's Lake, where he worked until he retired in Rolette ND. He continued doing some auto repair for himself and others until his health deteriorated.  Mark spent a little over a year at the VA Hospital in Fargo, before being admitted to the Garrison Long Term Care facility, where he remained until his death

Mark enjoyed fishing, card playing and reading.  He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Dunseith.

Pallbearers: Dave, John, Matthew and Jacob Schimetz, Fathyn Vandal, Marquis Logan.

Proceeding him in death are his Parents, Louis and Stella Schimetz, brothers Reid and Bryan, sister Kim Zorn, and his nephew, Ryan Vandal.

Surviving relatives are Colette Schimetz (Reid's wife) Bottineau,, Bill Zorn (Kim's husband) Wyoming, Kathy Wood-sister-Dunseith, Dave Schimetz (Kathleen-wife) Mandan, and many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary and visitation will be held at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00 pm.  A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 1:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery-Dunseith, with fellowship gathering at the Senior Citizen Center in Dunseith.

The family would like to thank all who have reached out during this difficult time.  We would also like to thank Nero Funeral Home, for their consistent exemplary  service, Father Sam and Sister Maryann-Dunseith for their participation in Mark's rosary and burial.
