Obituary

Lyle C.  Thompson passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 in a Minot hospital.

His funeral will be held on Friday at 10:00 A.M. in the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. Cremation will take place following the service. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2:00 P.M until 9:00 P.M. at Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Lyle C. Thompson, son of Gilbert and Judith (Torgerson) Thompson, was born on April 3, 1927 in Bottineau. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school and graduated from Bottineau High School. On February 14, 1945 he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS New Jersey in the Pacific. He received his honorable discharged on July 22, 1946. He then returned to the Turtle Mountains. On September 12, 1954 he was married to Vivian Mattern at First Lutheran Church in Bottineau.  Lyle and his brother Earl took over the family farm in 1954 raising cattle and small grains. Lyle retired from livestock farming in 1992 but continued to grain farm. He also worked many winters hauling fuel oil for his uncle Sivert Langhaug at Deep Rock.

Lyle was a leader of the Metigoshe 4-H Club. He was on the Bottineau School Board for 18 years, and served as a board member of the Rural Fire District and for the Ag. Improvement Association. Lyle received the FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer Award and also the Turtle Mountain Soil Conservation award in 1985.

Farming was Lyle's main hobby and source of enjoyment. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and bowling. His family spent most summer Sundays at their lake cabin where Lyle taught his kids, grandkids, and many nieces and nephews to water ski. Winters were spent snowmobiling and ice fishing. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW.

Lyle was a baptized  member of the Nordland Lutheran Church from birth until 1954. He then became a member of the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau from 1954 to Present. He served on the church council for several years.

In addition to his wife Vivian, he is survived by three daughters, Sherrie Solper (Dave) of Minot, ND, Judy Higgins (Alan) of Bottineau, ND, and Arlys Knudsvig (Mark) of Berthold, ND; one son, Curtis Thompson (Meri) of Wamego, KS; 12 Grandchildren; 22 Great-Grandchildren; 2 brothers, Kenneth Thompson of Summerset, SD and Maynard Thompson of Leesburg, FL; one sister, Janice Norderhus of Marian, Iowa and one aunt, Addie (Torgerson) Nielsen of Bottineau.

In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Kanyon Francis; one sister Muriel and one brother, Earl and an infant brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau and the Metigoshe Lutheran Cemetery Association.
