Lorraine V. Haakenstad, age 92 of Souris, died Saturday at a Rochester, MN assisted living center. Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service time on Saturday.
The last member of the Clarence and Ida (Livedalen) family passed away at Rochester, Minnesota. Lorraine (Sanderson) Haakenstad was born at Willow City,ND on June 17, 1925. Lorraine attended a rural grade school and had perfect attendance for all eight years, She attended Willow City High School graduating in 1943. After a short term at Minot State College she taught rural schools for a number of years. For several years she worked at the Westhope Nursing Home before taking a teller position at Souris State Bank. She worked here for several years, then took a similar position at the Peoples State Bank, Westhope ND, retiring in 2000, In 1953 she made a two month travel vacation to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and on to Hannover, Germany to attend the Lutheran World Federation convention of the American Lutheran Church. On July 25,1954 she was united in marriage to Alf Haakenstad of Souris, ND. They moved to the Haakenstad farm northwest of Souris, ND where Alf farmed with his brothers. Lorraine joined the Lesje Lutheran Church and held many positions in Sunday School, Women of the ELCA, helped Alf with the janitor job for forty years and was Treasurer of the church for over 42 years, Due to Alf's health problems they moved to Bottineau, ND in October of 1999. Alf passed away on February 10, 2000. Lorraine continued to live in Bottineau where she joined the Mission Aid and helped quilt at First Lutheran Church. She also joined the Senior Citizen Organization. In August 2015 she moved to Rochester MN, to be closer to her daughter, Amy.
Loraine enjoyed gardening, quilting, scrapbooks, pictures, and playing on the computer. In her later years, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter Amy (Greg) Gores of Rochester, MN and daughter-in-law, Jill Haakenstad of Kirkland, WA; Five grandchildren, Annie, Larson (Magdalena),and Kurt Haakenstad and Carissa (Erick) Gustafson and Karl (Kayliegh) Gores and several nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-in -law.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alf, her son Larry, parents, six brothers and 3 sisters. Blessed be her memory.
