Leona Clara (Nickel) Moe, 97, of Bottineau, North Dakota, went home to be with the Lord on August 13, 2022, at Missouri Slope Care Center in Bismarck. The funeral service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Bottineau on August 20, 2022, at 10:00 AM. A graveside service will be held at Oak Creek Cemetery following the church service. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice on behalf of Leona Moe.
Leona was born on April 18, 1925, to August Gotleib and Ella Lana (Buchholz) Nickel at their McHenry County farm. Leona was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Willow City, and confirmed at the church in Kramer. She attended the Willow Creek rural school through the eighth grade and worked for area farmers until her marriage to Oscar John Moe on July 19, 1942. Following Oscar's service during World War II, they built a house in Bottineau. During the summer months, they resided at their cabin at Lake Metigoshe.
Leona worked at several area businesses and had a home day care. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, word find puzzles, and was diligent about walking to maintain her health until her mid-nineties. She was an active volunteer at First Lutheran Church where she was a member and participated in activities by the WELCA women's group, St. Andrew's Hospital helping with BINGO, the Good Samaritan Nursing Home Heart Warmers with special meal events, and assembling Braille Bibles. She made her family a priority and demonstrated her great love for them. Leona resided at her home in Bottineau until August 2021 when she went to live with her daughter because of health issues.
Leona and Oscar had two children. Their son, Colin Oscar, married Cynthia Docken (Crosby, ND); they have two daughters, Cherie (Vimal) Shah and Chanda (Kelly) Hasby. Their daughter, Judith Lynn, married Dorvin Froseth (Bismarck, ND); they have a daughter, Melissa (Douglas) Sorge, and a son, Nathan Froseth. Leona is survived by her children, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren – Rohan Shah; Connor, Maci, and Ian Hasby; Elena and Kahlan Sorge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Clarence (Verona) Nickel and Albert (Violet) Nickel, three sisters, Adeline (Keith) Carr, Lenora (Alvin) Monson, Margaret (Lloyd) Monson, and twin great grandchildren Donavon and Chance Morel.
