Layton Gimbel, age 88 of Souris, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at a Bottineau nursing home.  His funeral will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 3:00 pm the Lakeside Chapel at the Christian Center at Lake Metigoshe.  Visitation will be Sunday from Noon until 7:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.  Burial will be at the Mountain View Cemetery at Souris.

Layton Jerald Gimbel, a son of William and Alma (Ihla) Gimbel, was born on March 12, 1934 in Bottineau.  He was raised on a farm northeast of Souris.  At a young age they moved to a farm south of Roth for a short time before moving to the farm west of Souris in 1945.  Layton graduated from Souris High School and then to Seattle WA and worked for Boeing.  He returned to Souris and on June 19, 1955, he married Connie Counts.  They lived on the family farm and in the spring of 1956, they moved to Bottineau.  In 1966, they moved back to Souris and opened Gimbel's Garage and Laundromat.  Layton was also a school bus driver and did maintence for the City of Souris.   Connie passed away on January 5, 1995.

Layton was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Souris where he served on the church council.  He also served on the Souris City Council, the Souris Community Club and the Souris Fire Department.

Layton passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at a Bottineau nursing home.

He is survived by one daughter, Vickie (Steve) McMechan of Pierson, MB; 3 sons, Randy (Linda) Gimbel of Russel, ND, Ricky (Cindy) Gimbel of Landa, ND and Ritchie (Holly) Gimbel of Souris, ND; 10 Grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one sister, Avis Stewart of Souris.
