Obituary

Larry Marchus, age 86 of Bottineau, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at a Bottineau hospital.  His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Bottineau.

Larry Wayne Marchus was born May 5th, 1936 in Rugby, North Dakota and was baptized shortly thereafter.  He was raised on a farm in the Wolford - Knox communities of Pierce county. He and his siblings, 3 brothers and one sister, attended country schools in the area and he graduated in 1954 as a Leeds Lion.  He then enlisted in the United States Army and served most of his tour in Germany.   Upon honorable discharge he moved to Alaska to follow his lifetime dream of hunting and fishing.  He picked up odd jobs to supplement his outdoor passion.  In the fall of 1959 he came back home only to visit his parents and his relatives but also met a teacher working in the Leeds Public School.  At that point he forgot all about fishing and hunting in Alaska and never went back.  He began to work for Otter Tail Power Company in Devils Lake and in June of 1962 he married that teacher, Mona McCoy.  He was transferred to Bottineau in the winter of 1964.  When required by his employer to transfer out of Bottineau he opted to quit in order to keep his family in Bottineau. He began selling insurance which he did until retirement.

He was very motivated and dedicated to his community and served in  many ways on many projects and boards all as a volunteer.  He was a man of strong conviction but of few words.  He loved his summer home of many years in the Turtle Mountains.

Larry and Mona had 3 children in their 60-plus years together.  Mary Dick (Rob), Laurie Nishek and Mike (Julie) Marchus. There are 6 grandchildren Jeff Dick (Elizabeth), Stephanie Nishek Marrufo (Carlo), Joelle Schaan (Ryan), Brendan Dick (Holly Johnson), McKayla Marchus and Matthew Marchus.  There are 6 great grandchildren Alexia, Felicity, Kylee, Cora, Blake and Silas.

Larry passed peacefully at St. Andrew's Hospital on Sunday, February 19th.  He was so loved by his family. His final church service will be Tuesday, February 28th at 2:00 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Bottineau.  The service will be live streamed.
