Larry
Baumann
Mar 26, 1937 — Mar 18, 2019
Larry Baumann, age 81 of Bottineau, died Monday at a Bottineau hospital. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am at the St. Mark's Catholic church in Bottineau. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Funeral Home.
Larry was born March 26, 1937 to Winthrop and Mabel (Feken) Baumann in Westhope, ND. He was raised in Westhope and graduated high school in 1955. Larry was active in sports and attended the Class "C" State Basketball tournament in 1954 and 1955, helping bring home the state championship to the Westhope Sioux in 1954. In high school he met the love of his life, Roberta "Bobbie" McLean, and was united in marriage on April 4, 1957 in Westhope where they started their family. While in Westhope, Larry worked for his grandfather at Baumann's Jack and Jill grocery store, the Soil Conservation Service, and L&M Trucking with his father-in-law, Harvey McLean. In 1961, Larry joined the U.S. Border Patrol and was assigned to his initial duty station in Chula Vista, CA. During his career, he worked as an Immigration Inspector in Portal; a Border Patrol Supervisor in El Centro, CA; an Immigration Inspector in Northgate, ND; and finally retiring as the Immigration Port Director in Portal, ND in 1992. Along the way, Larry and Bobbie continued to add to their family. He loved nothing more than being around his family and telling stories about his time in the Border Patrol. He was proud to have been followed in his career path by his brother and two of his sons.
Larry was an avid golfer and a huge fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Green Bay Packers. He could be heard cheering them on from miles away. He was a great father and grandfather and loved spending time with family and friends. At times he was known as the grandpa that "could take his teeth out". He was a great role model and the best son, brother, husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa that any person could hope to have. Larry was extremely proud of his family, his children and his grandchildren. We have been truly blessed by knowing him and sharing in his life.
Larry passed away on Monday, March 18, 2019 at a Bottineau hospital.
Larry is survived by his wife, Roberta "Bobbie" of Bottineau, his seven children: Randy (Jyl) Baumann of Cocoa Beach, Fl; Kevin (Deb) Baumann of Flaxton, ND; Susan (Mike) Hochstatter of Rush City, MN; Jeff (Deb) Baumann of Westminster, CA; Brett Baumann of Deadwood, SD; Casey (Janet) Baumann of Portal, ND; Jennifer (Brian) Peterson of Surrey, ND; 26 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; brothers James (Marie) Baumann of Brule, WI and Terry (Janice) Baumann of Westhope and sister Barbara (Dyron) Rauk of Fayetteville, GA; and uncle Bill (Cool) Baumann of Bottineau, ND.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Winthrop and Mabel Baumann and brother Donald Baumann, Step-grandson, Ashley Bakken.
