Obituary

On Saturday, September 14, 2019, C. John Tweten, loving brother and father of two children and five grandchildren, passed away at the age of 80 in a Minot hospital. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Willow City, ND.

Clayton John Tweten, known to everyone as John, was born to Oscar and Helma (Hanson) Tweten on April 23, 1939 in Rugby, ND. He was raised and graduated from Willow City High School in 1957, where he was a member of the 1956 State Class C Championship Basketball Team. John was the typical mischievous older brother and would tease his younger siblings. But he was also their protector.

He entered the Army in March of 1958 and was stationed at Ft MacArthur, CA until he was honorably discharged in March of 1960.  He returned to the Willow City area and married Janice Wittmayer in June 1962. They lived in Rugby before they moved to Berwyn Heights, MD where he worked for UPS. While living in Maryland, they also owned a lawn business with his sister and brother-in-law called G & T Lawn Maintenance. In 1975 they had the opportunity to move back to ND and purchase a business, Four Seasons Resort at Lake Metigoshe. They spent many hours working side by side which played a toll on their marriage, which then ended in 1979. He became a bulk propane driver for Ferrell Gas, formally Lystad Oil. In June of 1992 he worked as a Bottineau County 911 Dispatcher/Jail Operator until his official retirement in July 2001.

After retirement he enjoyed golfing as much as he could and working for Don Henry and family mowing grass. In February of 2008 he had a stroke and moved to Minot. He spent every weekend during the summer months at his Lake Metigoshe home until his fall in October 2016 where he entered Minot Health and Rehab and had resided there since.

He enjoyed watching all sports, whether they were on television or in person with friends and especially attending his grandchildren's sporting and milestone events. He also enjoyed golfing and snowmobiling and was a member of the Lake Metigoshe Snowmobile Club. John loved visiting with people and always had an open door policy. There were many times that friends would stop by and watch a game or share a joke and laugh with him.

He is survived by his children, Julie (Mike) Bickel and Jeff (Angel) Tweten. Grandchildren, Jeremy Bickel, Minot; Spencer Bickel, Minot; Madison Bickel, Minneapolis; Tyler Tweten, Japan; and Emily Tweten, Mandan. Sister, JoAnne (Robert) Gordon, Willow City; Brother, James Tweten, Pick City; Nephew, Bruce (Lisa) Gordon, Cedar Park, TX; Niece, Alyssa Tweten-Hoeppner, Minneapolis; and many extended family and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents.

Arrangements were with Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.  Friends may sign the online register book at www.nerofuneralhome.net.
