Obituary

John F. Bonn, age 95 of Rolla formerly of Bottineau, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the SMP Health Center in Rolla.

John was born November 18, 1928 to Edwin and Marguerite (Boatz) Bonn. John grew up on the family farm, attended Pleasant Valley rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Rolette High School.  In 1951 John enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict.

After John's discharge, he began his life long career in grocery store ownership, becoming co-owner of the Mylo Grocery Store and Locker Plant.  In 1961 he sold his interest in the store and moved to Washington.  While there, he was a meat cutter and market manager for Safeway Stores.  John also met and married Doralee McFarland while in Washington State.  In 1964 John moved his family back to Rolette where he owned the Rolette Meat Market and the Super Valu Store.

In 1980 John married Janice Courtney, semi-retired, and moved to Lake Metigoshe.  John loved to fish and could often be seen in the early morning hours trolling in his small boat on the waters of Lake Metigoshe.  John also worked part-time at Jerry's Jack & Jill in Bottineau.

John is survived by his son Kelly (Terri) Bonn and his daughter Lori (Michael) Fisher of Coeur d' Alene Idaho. Grandchildren Ryan, Derrick (Micah), & Brittany Bonn and Mikayla Fisher. Stepson Craig (Mary) Courtney, Carver MN and Stepdaughter Candice Getzlaff of Bottineau. Step Grandchildren: Lindsey (Adam) Danielson, Gina (Andrew) DePhillips, Ryan (Allison) Getzlaff, Riley (Desiree) Getzlaff and Tyler (Sarah) Getzlaff and 11 great grandchildren. John is also survived by his only living sibling, Julia Reed of Grand Forks and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janice, son Wesley, brothers Bernard and Laurence, sisters Gladys Bonn and Ferne Brannnan, sister-in-law Beverly Bonn,  brother-in-laws Kenneth Reed and Thomas Brannnan and stepson-in-law Dwane Getzlaff.

In their company, John now finds eternal peace and reunion.

In honor of John's request, there will be no service.  Burial will take place at the Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at a later date.
