James Leonard Henry (Jimmy), age 78 of Dunseith, ND passed away on Monday January 6, 2025, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. His funeral will be held on Monday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Eagle Heart Cultural Center in Dunseith. The wake will start on Monday morning at 9:00 am at the center.
Jimmy was born on April 20, 1946, to John Henry and Bernice Lecompte Henry in Belcourt, ND.
Jimmy was raised in Dunseith, ND where he attended Dunseith Day School. During his secondary school years, He competed on the traveling boxing team. At the age of 17 Jimmy enlisted in the United States Army. He served 15 months in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.
He returned to Dunseith and married Shirley Morin. They had 3 children, Roxanne, Aaron, and Jessica.
Jimmy retired after 30 years of service at Belcourt Indian Health Service where he worked as an EMT, Ambulance Transport Driver, Maintenance, as well as other positions. Jimmy continued to work after retirement for Dakota Tree Services, Dunseith Day School, and assisted with archaeological services.
Jimmy and Shirley enjoyed many years of traveling on their motorcycle visiting places like the Grand Canyon, doing river rafting, attending pow-wows, and visiting family and friend in the United States and Canada.
Jimmy spent his time at home with daily family visits. He spent his spare time haying and cutting wood. He raised and rode horses for many years. He was also involved with the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Shirley, children Roxanne, Aaron (Joni Lafountaine), and Jessica Henry (Brad Poitra), 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, & 2 more on the way. Siblings John, Jr, Patrick, Theodore, Brenda, Doraldine, and Mark Henry, and many nieces and nephews.
Jimmy is pre-deceased by his parents John & Bernice, siblings Betty Summers, Loretta Vivier, Joyce, Vivian, Melvin, and Brian Henry, and nieces and nephews.
Jimmy's family would like to thank and recognize all of his family and friends from the United States and Canada.
