Obituary

I van Christenson, age 90 of Bottineau, died Sunday at a Bottineau nursing home.  His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Throughout his early years, Ivan helped his father, Albert, on the family farm. Even when he was young, he knew that farming was in his blood. He and his wife, Delores, who he married on November 10, 1946, eventually bought the family farm from his father, and they made the farmstead their home for many years. When Ivan's days of farming God's land came to an end in 1983, he and Delores moved to Newburg and began the next chapter of their lives. Soon after moving, Ivan was elected mayor of Newburg and wore the title proudly. Though Ivan was still a farmer at heart, he dedicated his time to the people of the city he was proud to serve. While living in Newburg, he acquired a few special hobbies, including making lefse, which he will always be remembered for.
In 2008, he and Delores moved to Bottineau. Delores was soon moved into the nursing home, where he would often be found visiting her. Ivan continued making lefse (like the good Norwegian he was) and even sold it at the Bottineau Farmers' Market. His lefse quickly became popular among his customers, and he was given the title of "Lefse Man." He was also very fond of wood working. Many times he would be out in his shop at the crack of dawn, whittling a cane, or making a stool. When Ivan was not carving wood or rolling out dough, he could be found playing a game of cards. When all of his activities wore him out, he would lay back in his recliner to take a nap, but not before turning on his good, old fashioned, bluegrass music. His love for music, playing the harmonica, and his avid card playing were the hobbies that he was able to enjoy until the end of his life.
Ivan moved in to the Good Samaritan Society in the spring of 2018, and he spent the rest of his days next to his lifetime partner and loving wife. Though Ivan is gone, he will forever be remembered in the hearts of family and friends alike.
Ivan passed away peacefully into eternity on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at a Bottineau nursing home.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Delores of Bottineau; daughter Diane of Bottineau; son Larry (Veronica) of Kramer.
