Ione Skarphol, age 100 of Bottineau, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at a Bottineau hospital. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. Visitation will be Friday, October 14th from 2:00 pm from 8:00 pm with a prayer service 7:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Burial will be at the Oak Creek Cemetery in Bottineau. Her service will be livestreamed on the First Lutheran Church's Facebook page.
Ione Jeanette was born July 12, 1922, the daughter of Ben and Alma (Seter) Wall. She grew up on a farm 2 1/2 miles east of Carbury. She was the oldest girl in a family of 8 children. She attended Carbury Special School for 11 years and then graduated from Minnewauken High School. She attended School of Forestry and Minot State Teachers College and received her Standard Degree. Later she attended Minot State and received her B.S. Degree. She taught school in Roth, Landa, and Souris for 25 years.
Ione married Nels Skarphol of Souris on July 25, 1943. They lived on a farm near Roth for 15 years and in 1960 moved to Bottineau. Nels passed away on February 25, 1992.
Ione grew up in the Turtle Mt. Lutheran Church of Carbury, was a member of Trinity in Souris when the family lived on the farm and has been an active member of First Lutheran in Bottineau since. Ione taught Sunday School, belonged to WELCA and quilted. She was a Charter member of Sons of Norway and Active in Retired Teachers. In May of 2008, she moved to Oak Manor in Bottineau. In July of 2016 moved to St. Andrew's Long Term Care.
Ione was active in sports when growing up playing and coaching basketball. There were 3 seasons in Ione's life, baseball, football and basketball where she never would miss a game on TV. She also attended local sports whenever possible. One of Ione's favorite pastimes was embroidering. She did many thousands of dishtowels for St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary, and also enjoyed reading books and doing word search puzzles even into the last week of her life.
Ione leaves to mourn her passing son Gary (Jennifer) of Aliso Viejo, CA., daughter Sharon (Tom) Heilman of Bismarck, ND., 2 grandchildren Lindsey (David) Lindsey, Gilbert, AZ., and Eric (Laura) Heilman of St. Paul, MN., 3 great grandchildren Christian & Liv Lindsey and Nels Heilman, 2 brothers John Wall of Fargo, ND, and Kenneth of Minneapolis, MN., Sister-in-law Betsy Tallon Bottineau, ND., and many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Nels, brothers Harold (Mary), Russell (June), Howard (Francis), & sisters Doris (John) Birkner and Loraine (Owen) Bjorke. Joan Wall, Nels' siblings: Harold (Lillian), Verdeen (Gladys), Alice (Wallace) Gustafson, Mabel Brandvold, Agnes (Harold) Lindstrom, Marshall Tallon.
Memorials can be sent to St. Andrew's Hospital Foundation or First Lutheran Church.
