Obituary

Lawrence Harvey Soland (Harvey), age 86 of Bottineau, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Bottineau Good Samaritan Center. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lawrence Harvey Soland (Harvey) was born to Lawrence and Agnes (Engg) Soland on June 29, 1934 at home in Maxbass, ND. The family later moved to the Turtle Mountains where Harvey was raised and educated.

Harvey served his country in the US Army, stationed in Kentucky 1951-1952 and Germany 1952-1954. Following his discharge, Harvey returned to the Bottineau area where he met the love of his life Vivian Cote. They were joined in marriage September 20, 1958. They lived in Missoula, MT for a short time before returning to the Bottineau area, where they raised their family of eight children. Throughout the years as they raised their family, Harvey worked various jobs doing small engine repair, mechanic work at Frykman Motor Company, owned and operated a dairy farm on his parents' home farm for several years and he also worked at Pride Dairy for a time. In 1986, Harvey acquired his GED and in 1987 he attended Bismarck Junior College earning a degree in Refrigeration, Heating and Sheet Metal. Upon graduating, he began working at Bottineau Good Samaritan Center as the director of maintenance until his retirement at the end of 1999.

When Harvey was not working, he enjoyed his free time on their hobby farm where they raised many animals ranging from horses, calves, chickens, and emus to many dogs and even more cats! He kept very busy keeping his yard nicely manicured and he spent many hours working in his gardens. For the holiday season he would always string many Christmas lights and decorations until their entire yard was lit up for all the passersby to enjoy as they drove by on the highway. He also spent countless hours out in his shop working on many woodworking projects. He loved woodworking. He loved any time spent camping and fishing and never missed an opportunity to do so. He looked forward to random visits from kids and grandkids which often involved some coffee and Mom's baked goodies and always a game of cards or two. When he needed some time to himself, he was an avid reader and always enjoyed a good book or a walk through the woods around their farm. They continued to live on the farm until the fall of 2018, when they moved into Oak Manor Apartments in town.

Harvey was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In June of 2020, Harvey was admitted to Bottineau Good Samaritan Center due to declining health conditions.

Harvey will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Vivian; his children Cindy (Steve) Lauckner, Kramer, ND, Jeff (Luann) Soland, Paul (Lois) Soland, Candice Fulsebakke, Lynn Jahner, all of Bottineau, Brenda (Vance) Kitzman, Willow City, ND, Tony (Kim) Soland, Bloomington, MN, and Lisa (Steve) Hosna, Hinkley, MN. He is survived by 19 grandchildren Jackie (Brian), Joan (Jay), Erin, Brady, Danielle (Cody), Aaron, Alyssa (Michael), Trevor, Christopher, Melissa (Danny), Abby, Matthew (Laura), Scott, Michael, Darren, Delani, Landen, Garrett, and Dalton and 15 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Harvey is preceded in death by his siblings Arlan (Marleen), Virgil (Roberta), Gary, Betty (Leonard), Duane, and Karen (John).
