Gladys was born to Tosten and Rosina (Botten) Bjokne on November 26, 1929 and grew up on a farm near Landa, ND. Her parents died when she was young and she and her brother, Rueben were raised by their aunts, Emma and Matilda and guardians, Thomas and Selma Tonneson. She graduated from Souris High School in 1948 and in June that same year married Verdeen Skarphol in Souris, ND. They made their home on the Skarphol family farm where they continued to farm until 1997 when Verdeen's health declined. He passed away on June 20, 2000 on their 52 nd wedding anniversary. They raised four girls, Annette, Diane, Julie and Joan. She was a loving, Christian mother and hard-working farm wife. She was an excellent cook and baker, often serving meals to those helping Verdeen on the farm. She also enjoyed sewing, handiwork, and gardening. She was very involved in Trinity Lutheran Church, Souris. She was a Sunday School teacher, WELCA member and enjoyed playing piano in church, especially duets with Helen Erickson on the organ. They lived in Peabody Township for many years, and she was a member of Peabody Homemakers.

She was also proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed making traditional Norwegian dishes, especially lefse and lutefisk which was a family favorite especially on Christmas. She was also an active member of the Sons of Norway in Bottineau for many years. Her great- granddaughter Alivia, when she first started talking, called her Grandma Sparkle.
She moved to Bismarck in late 2012 to an assisted living facility. She later moved to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center and in Spring 2018 she moved to the Baptist Care Center as her health deteriorated. During this time, she enjoyed working puzzles and watching the birds on her feeder outside her window.

Gladys is survived by her daughters Annette (Walter) Doman, Ankeny IA; Diane (Ray) Boll, Newburg; Julie (Rockne) Bonsness, Hazen; and Joan Inman, Bismarck. She also has 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rueben Bjokne, Souris, and two sisters-in-law, Ione Skarphol and Betsy Tallon, both of Bottineau.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a son-in-law, Jim Inman.
