Gene Elwood Nehring, a son of Edward and Hattie (Bullinger) Nehring was born on December 7, 1928 at Bottineau. He had 3 sisters and one brother. Gene attended school in Gardena. He had to quit school at the age of 13 to help on the family farm after his dad suffered severe burns from a farming accident and was hospitalized for several months. On December 8, 1946, Gene married Hilma Schei at the Inherred Lutheran Church north of Bottineau. They lived on the farm near Gardena. In 1964, they built a home in Bottineau. From then on, they lived at the farm spring through fall and in Bottineau during the winter months. Hilma passed away on March 31, 2010. Loneliness after Hilma's passing found Gene a friendship and companionship with his next door neighbor, Reen Vestre. Gene and Reen were married on January 12, 2013. They graciously accepted each others families.
Gene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Gardena and later the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. He poured his heart and soul into farming his entire life and he became a very successful farmer. He could strike up a conversation with anyone. He took pleasure in joking and kidding with his family and friends. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching sports, especially hockey. He was an avid follower of his grandchildren's activities. He was a generous, kind and caring grandpa. As his health declined, Gene and Reen's family joined forces to help Reen keep Gene at home.
