Bangs
Sep 18, 1925 — Dec 8, 2025
Evelyn bangs, age 100 of Souris, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025 at a Velva nursing home. Her funeral will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026 at 10:00 am at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.
Evelyn Mary Bangs, the 10th out of 11 and last surviving child of Hubert and Anna (Schuett) Lesmann, was born on September 18, 1925 on the family farm near Westhope. She attended country school and later Westhope High School. At the age of 13, she spent a year at home while caring for her mother who was very ill. She made all the meals, did the household chores and baked 13 loaves of homemade bread each week. Evelyn met the man of her dreams, Arnold Bangs at a dance in Westhope. They dated until Arnold became a US Marine and served during WWII. They were married on July 30, 1946 at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Westhope. They welcomed 5 children of which 2 died in infancy. Evelyn was a strong God Fearing and God Loving woman and became a very hard-working co-partner to Arnold. She did custom baling for neighbors, was township assessor and her favorite job was running the John Deere combine. She also sewed clothes for her mom, herself, children and grandchildren. She started her day at 4:00 am before anyone else was up, making meals in a crockpot so she could be outside working. She had a beautiful lawn, garden and flowers. She was also very crafty, taking weeds and spraying them making beautiful bouquets.
She belonged to the Sons of Norway, the Altar Society. She enjoyed making and giving lefsa and doughnuts every Christmas. She loved to cook and bake and made caramel rolls and hot cocoa for school breakfasts.
Arnold passed away November 6, 2010. Evelyn lived alone on the farm with help from her children. In August of 2020 she broke her second hip and was no longer able to live at home, she moved to the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva on November 4. They took such good care of her and she loved it there but missed her home.
She is survived by her children, Kenneth Arnold Bangs (Nora Jean) of Bottineau, Nancy Kay Goettle (Lawrence) of Donnybrook, ND, Wayne Keith Bangs (Karen) of Farmersville, TX; grandchildren, Christopher Goettle (Kristy), Matthew Goettle (Jennifer), Thomas Goettle (Krista), Stephen Goettle (Tiffany), Vincent Goettle (Allison), Kay Quam (Brandon), Craig Goettle (Amanda), Alyssa Enger (Brandon) and Michael Bangs (Brittany); 37 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 infant sons, Thomas Alan Bangs and Craig Maloy Bangs; siblings, Arthur (Flora) Lesmann, Herbert (Ann) Lesmann, Lloyd (Louise) (Lynette) Lesmann, Lyle (Margaret) Lesmann, Albert Lesmann, Doretta (Edward) Biengessner, Irene (Elmer) Austin, Anna (Arthur) Austin and Alice (Marion) Huber.
