Obituary

Eugene Hett, age 80 of Minot, formerly of Kramer, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at his home in Minot. His funeral will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 10:30 am at the Grace Lutheran Brethren Church in Bottineau. Visitation will be Sunday starting at noon with a prayer service at 4:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Eugene Orren Hett, the son of Walter and Anona (Kelly) Hett, was born December 4, 1945, in Bottineau. He was raised near Gardena, where he was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church and where the values of faith, family, and hard work took root early in his life. He graduated from Gardena High School in 1963, as part of the last graduating class in Gardena. In 1966, Eugene was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

On March 27, 1966, Eugene married Elaine Hope Bjornseth at First Lutheran Church in Bottineau, beginning a partnership marked by devotion and steady love. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this March. During Eugene's Army training, the couple spent 10 months in New Jersey before returning home. After Eugene's service, he farmed in the Kramer area-work he took pride in and that shaped so much of his daily life. After retiring from farming, he continued to stay busy working for Bottineau County Spraying Services and helping his nephew Jay with farming.

Eugene quietly gave his time to others, serving on the Kramer School Board, with the Kramer Fire Department, and on the Elysian Township Board. He especially treasured time outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he took great joy in teaching his sons to hunt and fish-creating memories they will carry with them always.

Eugene's love of gardening began with lessons learned from his father, and it stayed with him throughout his life. Many mornings and evenings found him in the garden, tending each row with patience and care. He enjoyed sharing what he grew-especially his pickles, and he became a familiar face at the farmers market, where a visit with Eugene often came with a smile and a story.

Above all, Eugene will be remembered for his steadfast love for Elaine, his pride in his family, and the simple ways he showed he cared-through service, time spent outdoors, and the generous sharing of what he had.

Eugene leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elaine; two sons, Shannon (Tracy) Hett of Manly, lowa, and Ryan (Danae) Hett of Minot, North Dakota; and his grandchildren: Chris (Bailey) Hett of Mason City, lowa; Angie Hett of Northwood, lowa; Rachel Hett of Bottineau, North Dakota; Annika Grann of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Jayden Hett of Minot, North Dakota; Alieciana (Nathan) Goetz of Minot, North Dakota; Jordan Bercier of Fargo, North Dakota; and Morgan Torr of Garrison, North Dakota. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Rudolph of Layton, Utah. Great-grandchildren include Mabel and Betty Hett of Mason City, lowa, and RaeLeigh Bercier and Jameson Goetz of Minot, North Dakota.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; his son, Nolan; his brother, Orell (Delores) Hett; his sisters, Lila (Egan) Klebe and Thelma (Byron) Bullinger; his brother-in-law, Robert Rudolph; his nephews Steve Hett, Greg Bullinger, and Rick Klebe; and his niece Juanita Lorentz.
