Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Stewart, age 93 of Bottineau, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at a Bottineau nursing home.  Her memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau.

Elizabeth(Betty) Louise Stewart, was born on May 14, 1932 in the log home belonging to her Grandma Gunderson near Kenyon,MN. She was the second born child to Lloyd and Hilda(Gunderson) Brusletten. Betty was baptized and later confirmed within the Lutheran church.

Betty's family's home was in Gardena, where she attended school at a one-room country school and graduated from Gardena High School. After high school, Betty attended Minot State College and received a degree in teaching.

Betty went to Bottineau for a dance that would forever change her life. It was at this dance that she met Jack James Stewart. They were married on June 25, 1953. Their marriage brought them three children; Roxanne Marie, Gregory Dean and Pamela Gail. Betty and Jack and their children lived in Ray, ND from 1953 until 1971 before building their forever home in Bottineau. In 1987, Betty took on the role of "World's Best Grandma", which was a title she held with pride and joy.

Betty was a lifelong learner and educator, beginning her career as a school teacher. Later, she worked as a store clerk in the clothing department at JoAnn's in Bottineau, where she enjoyed visiting with customers and being part of the community. She and Jack were also property managers in the Bottineau area.

She had a deep love for home and family life and was known for her baking and cooking—always making sure those around her were well fed and cared for. Lunch with Betty wasn't your noon meal, it was tea and cookies because dinner was served at 12 and was almost always a hotdish. Christmas dinners of meatballs and gravy were always made special with stockings hung with care, filled to the brim with gifts from Santa! A tradition cherished by her grandkids was the night before back-to-school supper of her famous fried chicken.

Betty was also a collector of many things; displayed around her tidy home were items such as spoons, magnets, teacups, and pins from places she and Jack had been and things that they loved. She had a special gift for preserving memories, taking countless photographs and creating treasured memory photo books for her family. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed hand stitching and reading books and the newspaper. Her favorite book was Anne of Green Gables.

Betty was actively involved in her community. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and was deeply committed to the Order of the Eastern Star, where she remained active for many years. She was a member of Bottineau's Women Club where she hosted many gatherings at her home. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church in Bottineau, where she participated faithfully and found great fellowship.

Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Roxanne; her husband, Jack Stewart; her parents, Lloyd and Hilda; her sister, Marilyn (Glen) Milbrath; her brother, Harold Brusletten(Joyce); her parents-in-law, Albert and Lena Stewart; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Maxine Stewart; her nieces, Nancy Cunningham and Sue Kish; and her nephews, Dwight Milbrath and Jimmy Stewart.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Dean (Deborah); her daughter, Pamela Gail (Rick Moum); her grandsons, Shelby Phillip Stewart(Christy) and Joshua James Moum (Amanda) ; her granddaughters, Shay Elizabeth (Mike Statz), Jessica Lynn (Travis Frederickson), and Libbi Anne Stewart(Cody); and her great-grandchildren, Mylo and Jack Stewart, Finley and James Moum, Coburn and Channing Statz, and Lennon Frederickson.

Betty truly lived a beautiful life and she will be remembered as a loving, spirited, and witty, pure Norwegian, mother, aunt, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend.
