Einar witnessed a lot in his life, he was eleven when Norway was occupied during WW2. As a teenager he enlisted in the merchant marines and after a dangerous incident in North Atlantic he decided to leave for the United States. He came to the United States on the Queen Mary in 1949. When passing through Ellis Island with a note stuck to his hat to be recognized to who would pick him up. He made his way to Souris, ND speaking no English where he would meet Carl Skarpol. Sometimes jumping a box car headed west he always found his way back to Bottineau.
