A life-long resident of Willow City, she was born to Arthur and Lelia Tuttle Vollmer at Bottineau on December 30, 1928, which happened to be the second birthday of her brother Raymond (Buzzy). They celebrated together for many years. She graduated from Willow City High School in 1947 and that same year on November 23 she married Gerald Semler; they farmed, ranched and raised their family on the farm south of Willow City. In 2005 they sold the farm to their granddaughter and husband and moved into Willow City. He passed away in 2009 after nearly 62 years of marriage.
Doris was a homemaker until mid-life when she worked as a bank teller for a number of years. A devout Christian, she was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Willow City, and its women's group, her homemaker's club, a volunteer braille center, and she loved bingo. She raised huge gardens and helped out around the farm; she and Gerald enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling, couples league bowling in Bottineau, visiting family and friends, and playing cards. She also enjoyed visits with her six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: daughter Cynthia (Sherwood) Haakenson, Willow City; son Tim (Connie), Willow City, daughter Susan (Tim) Arneson, Polson, MT; grandchildren: Todd (Kristie) Haakenson, Brekka (Corey) Belisle, Holly (Daryl) Pritschet, Lacey Semler, Jesse (Hanna) Arneson, and Kayla (Schuyler) Michael; and great-grandchildren Brody, Brock, Blake and Brant Haakenson; Olivia and Jayce Belisle; Taylor and Jack Pritschet; Henrietta and Arlo Arneson; Sloane Michael. She is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Law, Rolla and a brother, Victor Vollmer, Willow City and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, her brother Buzzy Vollmer, a sister-in-law and several brothers-in-law.
Her funeral service, which is open to the public, will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2:00 p.m. at Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral home. Following the service a time of fellowship will be held at the Willow City Community Hall. Burial will be in the spring at Memorial Park Cemetery, Willow City.
