Obituary

Denise Peltier, age 65 of Dunseith, died Monday at a Belcourt hospital.  Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:00 am at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Dunseith.  Her wake service will be on Sunday beginning at 7:00 pm at the church.  Burial will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Dunseith.

Denise was born to Joseph J. and Delores L. (Davis) Peltier in Belcourt, North Dakota, on January 2, 1954. She was the fourth of eleven children. As a young girl she was influenced by her parents and grandmothers to be respectful, helpful and generous and she carried these traits throughout her life. She attended elementary school at the Dunseith Day School, and she finished high school at Dunseith Public School in May 1971. After High School she attended a year of college at Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas.

In 1973, Denise was blessed with the birth of her son Daniel who was her pride and joy. She was a basketball mom and cheerleader throughout her son's sports life. She was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother to Kelsey, McKayla, Danielle, Robert, Abrahm, Noah and William; great-grandmother to Aspen Marie, a sister and a friend.

Denise was an accomplished professional in her position as the Land Manager for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa for 39 Years. She left the position in September 2019. Over the years she assisted many people with securing homesites, agricultural and business leases, and worked on other tribal trust land use matters. Denise incorporated the Tribe's Sovereign Rights into her daily work life and expanded the Tribe's Programs and Services. She initiated the Noxious Weed Program, the Water Resource Program, the Tribal Forestry Contract, developed the Tribe's Integrated Resource Management Program, and worked on the Tribe's License Plate Program. In her role with the Tribe she was active in Intertribal Coalitions that included being a founding member of the Intertribal Ag Council, and the Mni Sose Intertribal Water Rights Coalition.

Denise was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents- Delores and Joseph Peltier; her sister – Betty Delorme, her grandson- Robert Peltier; and her nephews – Adam Peltier and Logan Langland.
