Obituary

Dean Essen, age 78 of Lake Metigoshe, died Saturday at a the Bottineau hospital.  His funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am at the Lake Metigoshe Christian Center.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.  The family requests that memorials be given to the Lake Metigoshe Christian Center or Annie's House.  Burial will be at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery at Battleview, ND.
Dean Essen, a son of Olaf and Emogene (Grote) Essen, was born on December 5, 1939 at Powers Lake, ND.  He began working for his father at the Farmers Union Oil Co in Powers Lake as a teenager.  He graduated from Powers Lake High School in 1957.  Dean went on to attended NDSU in Fargo where he met Carol Warner.  They were married on October 8, 1960 in Moorhead, MN.  In 1961, he became the manager of the Farmers Union Oil in Flaxton.  In 1970, he became the manager at the Farmers Union in Westhope and in 1983, he also took over the Farmers Union in Bottineau.  They purchased a home on Lake Metigoshe in 1977 and moved there in 2001 after his retirement.
Dean was a member of the Metigoshe Lutheran Church.  He served as City Auditor and also as the Fire Chief for the City of Flaxton.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Westhope Nursing Home and St. Andrew's Hospital in Bottineau.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Lake Metigoshe; sons, Patrick and his wife, Cindy of Watertown, MN and Peter and his wife, Anjanette of Orlando, FL; grandchildren; Jonathan Essen, Taylor (Amanda) Essen and Jordan (fiancé Maria) Essen; great-granddaughter, Olivia Essen; brother, Earl Kenneth Essen of Tioga and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John and brothers, Ernest, Larry and Myron.
