Obituary

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of David L. Hunt, who took his final breaths surrounded by his loving family November 2, 2024. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 11, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Dunseith. A wake will be held at 8 a.m., followed by the rosary at 9 a.m. Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in rural Dunseith. A lunch reception will be held at the Eagle Heart Cultural Center in Dunseith following the service.

David Lee Hunt was born April 3, 1955, in Wolf Point, MT, to Don and Blanche Hunt. He grew up in rural Montana and Dunseith, working on the family farm and learning household duties from his mother, who taught her sons to treat their future wives as equal partners. He worked hard all his life and had a passion for the automotive industry, having saved every penny from his first job to build his very own car. He also became an accomplished semi-truck driver in his teen years, displaying levels of skill and professionalism that impressed his much older peers.

On June 12, 1974, David married his sweetheart, Carmelita (Peltier). Together, they built a beautiful family and had a wonderful marriage, and they recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Early on, David and Carm lived in Devils Lake, where David earned his certification in welding. In 1980, along with their children Karlee, Jill, and David, they moved to Bismarck, where David honed his skills as an ironworker. After the arrival of their youngest child, Phoebee, the family relocated to and settled in Dunseith.

David spent many years working hard to provide for his family through various professions, including auto-body work, monster truck driving, construction, housing/vehicle maintenance, and semi-truck driving. While Carmelita spent the week in Minot attending classes at MSU, David continued his full-time work while also caring for their children and providing their regular dinner of hamburgers and fried potatoes ("Sometimes it was cheeseburgers and hashbrowns!").

There are so many special things about David that made him such a beloved father and papa to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Even with all the amazing things he had done throughout his life, he always said his greatest accomplishment was his family. He had special nicknames for so many of us, and he had an extra special love for the littles (most recently Bumpy and Cheerio).

David is survived by his wife, Carmelita of Dunseith; his children, Jill Morin of Fargo, David (Carla) Hunt of Dunseith, and Phoebee (Landon) Stensland of Grand Forks; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers and 2 sisters; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Karlee Hunt-Blue; sister, Shirlee Morin; parents-in-law, Edward and Madeline Peltier; parents, Blanche Hunt and Don Hunt; several nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles, and cousins.
