Darrell Lee L'Esperance started his journey on May 16, 2024 at the age 56 at his home near Dunseith.
Darrell was born on October 4, 1967 to Peter Joe and Diana (Counts) L'Esperance in Belcourt. He was raised by his mother until her passing in 1976, at which time he lived with his aunt and uncle, Garry and Theresa Counts for a time. He then moved to Minneapolis with his father, Peter and Joe and step mother, Betty. Darrell attended school in in Dunseith, Bottineau, Grafton, Crystal and Minneapolis. He later received his GED and worked many jobs as a house roofer.
Darrell loved to fish, hunt, play cards and Dominos with his cuz, Delila (Counts) Hunt. Darrell was especially close to his sister, Julie McConnell. She would do anything for her brother. Darrell Loved to be around friends and family. Anywhere he went people always knew him as Darrell or Darrell Barrell.
On June 12, 2021, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Jackie. They made their home in Elk River and later returned to Dunseith where he spent his last days around family and friends.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Jackie L'Esperance; son, Ryan Kuykendall; daughters, Nicole Schwezler and Casey Peterson all of Elk River, MN; 3 granddaughters, Finnley, Leanne and Violet; brothers, Dan (Carol) L'Esperance, David St. Clair of Dunseith; sisters, Arlene (Tony) Azure of Dunseith, Julie (John) McConnell of Willow River, MN and Kathy Cretilli of Blaine, MN.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Diana L'Esperance; father, Peter Joe L'Esperance; step-father, Peter St. Clair; step-mother, Betty L'Esperance; 3 brothers, Donald and Dennis L'Esperance and Rodney Opheim; 3 sisters, Gail Counts, Shirley Mickelson and Linda Udell; 2 nieces, Shatehya Azure and Kalyn Aiken; 3 nephews, Terrance L'Esperance, Anthony Azure Jr and Brett James Azure and grandparents, Patty and Walter Counts.
The family would like to thank everyone for your love and support in Darrell's last days and at the time of our loss. God bless you all.
