Claudette McLeod's Obituary
- Claudette Marie McLeod of Dunseith, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, at St. Kateri Hospital in Rolla, North Dakota.
- Claudette was born on June 7, 1962, in Belcourt, North Dakota, to Leonard and Violet (Poitra) McLeod. She spent her younger years in Dunseith, where she attended Dunseith Public School. She married Clifford “George” Counts, together they had three kids Herbie, Carleen, and Carleeta and later divorced.
- Throughout her life, Claudette dedicated herself to serving others and making a difference in her community and in the lives of young people. Her professional life included working at the Dunseith Police Department from 1978-1985, San Haven Hospital from 1985-1987, TMH from 1992-1998, currently employed as the Director of Turtle Mountain Outreach program & The Boys and Girls club.
- Claudette earned her GED in Bottineau in 1982 and continued her education at TMCC, where she received an Associate of Arts degree in 1992.
- Claudette was deeply involved in her community. She served as a Dunseith Public School Board member from 1988 to 1994 and was a member of the Chippewa Youth Service Board from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, she became a foster parent, opening her heart and home to children in need. She also completed mentor training in early childhood mentoring, continuing her commitment to supporting and encouraging young people.
- Claudette is survived by Carleeta (Jeremy) Grant, Paige Counts; her special friend, Ricky Short; her sisters, Julie Belgarde of Bismarck, Michelle and Madonna McLeod of Dunseith; and her brother, Donovan Houle of Dunseith, and Jolean Houle of Belcourt.
- She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Jevlyn Medina, Clifford Counts, Callie Counts, Chasity Counts, Canyn Counts, Xzayne, Xzayden, Kieler (Mhaddie) Counts, Julius (Meghan) Grant, and Georgia Grant; and her great-grandchildren: Kahliope Grant, Oliver Counts, Knox Counts, Kalani Azure, Kinsley Azure, Calyn Counts, Sa’Riah Counts, and Rossi Peltier.
- Claudette was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Violet (Poitra) McLeod; her son, Clifford (Herbie) Counts Jr.; and her daughter, Carleen Counts.
- Claudette will be remembered for her caring heart, her dedication to her community, and the many lives she touched through her work and service. Her legacy of compassion, generosity, and love will live on through her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
- She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who loved her.
