Obituary

Beth Smette

Beth Smette, age 83 of Newburg, died Wednesday at a Fargo hospital. Funeral will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Dovre Lutheran Church in Newburg. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Burial will be at the Dovre Lutheran Cemetery at Newburg.

Beth Smette, a daughter of Frederick and Viva (Parmeter) Sund, was born on January 19, 1928 at Newburg. She was reared there and graduated from Newburg High School. She went on to earn her teaching certificate from Minot State Teachers College. She taught in Noonan, ND and in Port Townsend WA, before returning home to teach in Russell and Newburg. On June 23, 1956, she married Howard Smette at Newburg. They made their home at Newburg and Beth worked at Sund Manufacturing for a time. Howard passed away on November 11, 2009.

Beth was a member of the Dovre Lutheran Church in Newburg where she was a Sunday School Teacher, served on the church council and was active in the WELCA. She was also active in the Newburg PTA, served on the Newburg School Board and was a member of the Republican Women's Association. She served in the ND House of Representatives from 1985 until 1990. She also enjoyed bowling.

Beth passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2011 at a Fargo hospital.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah (Leonard) Hoskin of Maxbass, DeVonna (Delbert) Williamson of Batesville, IN, Dorothy (William) Pribula of Milnor, ND and Donna (Tom) Samuelson of Horace, ND; 2 sons, Kris Smette of Newburg and Jeffrey (Stephanie) Smette of Fargo; grandchildren, Ian Williamson, Collin and Jordan Pribula, Katelin and Hawkin Smette, Rachel Samuelson Dwyer (Jack), Hannah, Josef and Isaac Samuelson and Karli, Hailee and Emmie Smette; great grandchildren, Jesse Dwyer and Dahlia Beth Dwyer; sisters, Rosaline Sund of Minot and Iris Henning of Bozeman, MT and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Beth was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Clayton Williamson and Gerald Smette; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Smette and 2 brothers, Jack and Lloyd Sund.
