Died: November 25, 2011

A memorial service for Bernice Matteson, age 80 of Minot, formerly of Westhope, died Friday at a Minot nursing home, will be held on Thursday at 2:00 P.M. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope. There will be no reviewal, cremation has taken place. Interment will be at the Westhope Cemetery.

Bernice Matteson, a daughter of Thomas and Selma (Botten) Tonneson, was born on January 5, 1931 at Souris. She was reared there and graduated from Souris High School in 1948. She attended Concordia College for a year and graduated from Minot State Teachers College in 1950. She taught at several country schools in Bottineau County. She also taught at Newburg, Landa and Westhope. On June 25, 1954, she married Garnett Matteson at the Turtle Mountain Lutheran Church near Carbury. They made their home in Westhope. She worked as a bookkeeper at Great Plains Supply and later she was the Westhope City Auditor. Garnett passed away on October 19, 1980. Bernice remained in Westhope until moving to Minot in 2010.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope where she was active in the WELCA and served as organist for many years. She was also a member of the Westhope Senior Citizens, the Westhope Garden Club and the Westhope Community Club.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Deb (Jon) Kibby of Bloomington, MN and Susie Matteson of Minot; 2 sons, Mike Matteson (Kathy) of Westhope and Tom Matteson of Alexandria, MN; grandchildren, Tiffany Matteson of Minot, Spencer Matteson of Westhope and Nick Kibby of Bloomington, MN; sister, Lavonne Pederson (Norman) of San Antonio, TX; sisters-in-law; Joyce DeMars of Westhope, Nancy Wright of Coffeyville, KS and Irene Tonneson of Souris and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Maynard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope and the Westhope Cemetery.
