Funeral services for Donovan Vestre, age 75 of Bottineau, were held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. Officiating at the service was the Reverend Glenn Berge. Shelly Berge was the organist and special music was provided by the First Lutheran Church Choir. Casket bearers were Kyle Rude, Jeff Gartner, Lloyd Nelson, Jim Kofoid, Sherman Langhaug and Lyle Lunde. Honorary casket bearers were Don’s grandchildren. Burial will be at the Oak Creek Cemetery in Bottineau.
Donovan Maynard Vestre, a son of Nick and Dagny (Moen), was born on February 23, 1936 at Bottineau. He was raised on a farm northeast of Souris. They moved into Bottineau in 1941. Donovan attended Bottineau Public Schools and graduated from Bottineau High School in 1954. He later graduated from the Bottineau School of Forestry and continued his education at UND at Grand Forks. On November 23, 1958, he married Clareen Nelson at Mohall. Don worked as a bookkeeper of Koland Construction from 1958 to 1963. He than was assistant office manager at the School of Forestry from 1963 until 1976 at which time he purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Bottineau. Years later after closing the store, he worked for TMC of Dunseith before retiring. During retirement he made doughnuts at Dan’s Super Valu and also helped at Lowe’s Garden Center.
He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau where he served on the Building Committee, Church Council and served as treasurer for a time. He also served on the Bottineau School Board, Bottineau Area Chamber of Commerce Board, Quarterback Club and was a member of the Sons of Norway.
Don passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at a Bottineau hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Clareen of Bottineau; son, James (Hilary) Vestre and daughter Juli (Kyle) Rude both of Bottineau; grandchildren, Kenny (Mindy) Rude of Center, ND, Kory Rude (Kelsy DeLauries) of Grand Forks, Nick Vestre (Heather Mills) of Bottineau and Jennifer Vestre (Levi Svihl) of Bismarck; nieces Lori (Dan) Flaherty of Chandler, AZ, Lori (Mike) Wentz of Mandan, Becki (Olen) Hagen of Souris, and Debbie Chalcraft of Casa Grande, AZ; nephew, Doug (Darla) Nelson of Gilbert, AZ and numerous cousins, friends and his special friend and best buddy, Kirby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Claremont and Norris and sister, Maxine; niece, Sheryl Verhulst; and mother and father-in-law, Julius and Mabel Nelson.
