Dorothy I. Halvorson


Dorothy I. Halvorson, age 79 of Dunseith, died Thursday in a Bismarck hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. in the Peace Lutheran Church in Dunseith. Burial will be in the Rendahl Cemetery of rural Dunseith. Visitation will be Monday beginning at 4:00 P.M. in the Peace Lutheran Church in Dunseith.

Dorothy Idel Halvorson, a daughter of Sigrid and Hannah (Lagerquist) Christianson, was born at Bottineau on November 6, 1931. She was raised on the family farm in the turtle Mountains. She attended school both in Washington State and Bottineau, ND graduating from Bottineau in 1949. Dorothy attended Minot State College, then taught in several country schools in the area for several years. Dorothy then began teaching at the Dunseith Public School. On August 12, 1953 she was married to Lester Halvorson at Dunseith where they farmed and lived in the Turtle Mountains and they raised 5 children. Dorothy retired after 25 years of teaching.

Dorothy was a strong woman of faith and her sweet and kind spirit touched many lives and continues to inspire her friends and family. She enjoyed nature and teaching her children and grandchildren about gardening and the birds she enjoyed feeding. Dorothy was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend. Enduring a long illness she was a source of encouragement and her good sense of humor shined throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband, Lester Halvorson of Dunseith; daughters, Gail and her husband Larry Schuler of Bismarck, Lynette and her husband Greg Otto of Boonton, NJ, Donna and her husband Kurt Krim of Sartell, MN and Lori Halvorson of Dunseith; a son Michael Halvorson and his wife, Natascha of Bottineau; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Baskett of Gig Harbor, WA; a brother Raymond Christianson and his wife Mary of Dunseith.
